Observations of M , L , and T Dwarfs

چکیده
We present the first mid-infrared spectra of brown dwarfs, together with observations of a low-mass star. Our targets are the M3.5 dwarf GJ 1001A, the L8 dwarf DENIS-P J0255−4700, and the T1/T6 binary system ǫ Indi Ba/Bb. As expected, the mid-infrared spectral morphology of these objects changes rapidly with spectral class due to the changes in atmospheric chemistry resulting from their differing effective temperatures and atmospheric structures. By taking advantage of the unprecedented sensitivity of the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope we have detected the 7.8 μm methane and 10 μm ammonia bands for the first time in brown dwarf spectra. Subject headings: stars: low mass, brown dwarfs – infrared: stars

A Chandra X-ray detection of the L dwarf binary Kelu-1 Simultaneous Chandra and Very Large Array observations
Context. Magnetic activity in ultracool dwarfs, as measured in X-rays and Hα, shows a steep decline after spectral type M7-M8. So far, no L dwarf has been detected in X-rays. In contrast, L dwarfs may have higher radio activity than M dwarfs. Aims. We observe L and T dwarfs simultaneously in X-rays and radio to determine their level of magnetic activity in the context of the general decline of ...
متن کاملRadio Observations of a Large Sample of Late M , L and T Dwarfs : The Distribution of Magentic Field Strengths
We present radio observations of a comprehensive sample of 90 dwarf stars and brown dwarfs ranging from spectral type M5 to T8. We detect three radio active sources in addition to the six objects previously detected in quiescence and outburst, leading to an overall detection rate of about 10% for objects later than M7. From the properties of the radio emission we infer magnetic field strengths ...
متن کاملBenchmark Transiting Brown Dwarf Lhs 6343 C: Spitzer Secondary Eclipse Observations Yield Brightness Temperature and Mid-t Spectral Class
There are no field brown dwarf analogs with measured masses, radii, and luminosities, precluding our ability to connect the population of transiting brown dwarfs with measurable masses and radii and field brown dwarfs with measurable luminosities and atmospheric properties. LHS 6343 C, a weaklyirradiated brown dwarf transiting one member of an M+M binary in the Kepler field, provides the first ...
متن کاملConstraining the Distribution of L - & T - Dwarfs in the Galaxy ∗
We estimate the thin disk scale height of the Galactic population of L& T-dwarfs based on star counts from 15 deep parallel fields from the Hubble Space Telescope. From these observations, we have identified 28 candidate L& T-dwarfs based on their (i−z) color and morphology. By comparing these star counts to a simple Galactic model, we estimate the scale height to be 350±50 pc that is consisten...
متن کاملParallaxes of L and T dwarfs
We discuss a new program to measure the parallaxes of a number of L and T dwarfs, objects that bridge the gap between M dwarfs and planets. This pilot project tests the feasibility of using large telescopes with infrared detectors to determine parallaxes at the level of milli-arcseconds (mas). First results show that we are able to achieve the required centroiding precision and simulations indi...
متن کاملRadial Velocity Variability of Field Brown Dwarfs
We present paper six of the NIRSPEC Brown Dwarf Spectroscopic Survey, an analysis of multi-epoch, highresolution (R ∼ 20,000) spectra of 25 field dwarf systems (3 late-type M dwarfs, 16 L dwarfs, and 6 T dwarfs) taken with the NIRSPEC infrared spectrograph at the W. M. Keck Observatory. With a radial velocity (RV) precision of ∼2 km s, we are sensitive to brown dwarf companions in orbits with p...
